Tauranga Bay
A wild cove 12 km from Westport, Tauranga Bay is known for its fur seal colony visible from a coastal viewpoint, accessed via a clifftop trail along Cape Foulwind.
Tauranga Bay is a wild cove on the west coast of the South Island, a few kilometres north of Westport. The black shingle and grey sand beach opens onto the often-turbulent Tasman Sea. It is chiefly known for its colony of kārearea — or more precisely, its New Zealand fur seal colony (kekeno), accessible on foot from the car park. A raw natural site, without heavy tourist infrastructure.
Practical Information at a Glance
- Access: coastal road from Westport northward (Cape Foulwind Road); free parking at the end of the road.
- Entry: free.
- Recommended duration: 1 to 2 hours for the walk and seal observation.
- What to wear: walking shoes recommended; strong winds are frequent, bring a waterproof layer.
- Golden rule: do not approach within 20 metres of seals; animals may charge.
What to See
The coastal path leads to a viewing platform overlooking the rocks where dozens of fur seals rest. Young ones play in rock pools; adults sleep on sandstone blocks. In the background, the cliffs of Cape Foulwind close the horizon. The Tasman Sea strikes the rocks with relentless energy, even in calm weather.
History and Context
The neighbouring cape, Cape Foulwind, owes its name to Abel Tasman, who sailed along this coast in 1642 during foul weather. The fur seal colony was decimated by intensive hunting in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since legal protection, the population has recovered, and the Tauranga Bay colony is now one of the most accessible on the west coast.
Highlights of Your Visit
The Fur Seal Colony
The viewpoint offers a sweeping view of the rocks, occupied year-round. In the Austral summer (November–February), pups are born on site. The smell and sound — grunts, splashing — make the scene very tangible.
The Cape Foulwind Trail
A marked path connects Tauranga Bay to Omau Settlers Lodge along the clifftops. The round trip from the car park takes about two hours. Views across the jagged coast and Tasman Sea are unobstructed throughout.
The Black Shingle Beach
The beach itself, with its dark pebbles polished by waves, is characteristic of the New Zealand west coast. Swimming is not recommended due to strong currents and heavy surf.
Photography Tips
Morning light is softer and illuminates the rocks from the east. The viewpoint allows overhead shots of seals without disturbing them. A telephoto lens (200 mm or longer) helps isolate the animals. Avoid late afternoon backlighting facing the Tasman Sea.
Location and Access
Tauranga Bay is located about 12 km north-west of Westport, accessible via Cape Foulwind Road. Westport is connected to Nelson by SH6 (approximately 2.5 hours) and to Greymouth to the south (approximately 1 hour). There is no regular public transport to the site; a personal vehicle or rental is necessary. The car park is flat and the path to the viewpoint is manageable for most walkers, though not certified wheelchair-accessible due to uneven terrain.
