A fishing port nestled in the heart of the Marlborough Sounds, Havelock is New Zealand's green mussel capital and the departure point for cruises in Pelorus Sound.

Havelock is a small fishing port tucked at the end of Pelorus Sound, in the Marlborough region, at the northern tip of the South Island. Nicknamed the "world capital of green mussels," it serves as a departure point for cruises through the Marlborough Sounds and attracts seafood enthusiasts, kayakers, and hikers. Its modest size contrasts with the richness of the marine environment surrounding it.

Quick practical information

  • Access: on State Highway 6, between Nelson and Blenheim; approximately 70 km from Nelson and 40 km from Blenheim.
  • Recommended duration: half a day to a full day, longer if you embark on a cruise through the Sounds.
  • Dress code: no particular requirements; bring warm clothing for boat excursions.

What to see

Havelock port concentrates most of the activity: fishing boats, supply ferries for mussel farms, and pleasure craft. Along the waterfront, a few restaurants serve fresh mussels landed directly from the boats. The marina is the departure point for "mail boat" cruises that service isolated dwellings in Pelorus Sound.

History and context

Havelock is named after British general Henry Havelock, a hero of the Indian Wars. The town developed in the nineteenth century as a center for logging and gold panning in the Wakamarina valley. Ernest Rutherford, the New Zealand physicist and father of nuclear physics, grew up in the region and attended the local school before leaving to study in Nelson.

Highlights of the visit

Cruise through Pelorus Sound

Pelorus Sound is one of New Zealand's longest fjords. Cruises departing from Havelock allow you to spot dolphins, seabirds, and active mussel farms. The "mail boat" cruise remains the most authentic experience: it supplies isolated residents while crossing spectacular waterways.

Green mussel tasting

New Zealand's green mussel (Perna canaliculus) is farmed in the cold, clean waters of the Marlborough Sounds. Port restaurants serve them steamed plain, marinière-style, or au gratin. This is where New Zealand's mussel farming industry is most concentrated.

Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve

About twenty kilometers west of Havelock, this forest reserve is home to century-old native beeches and a river with crystal-clear waters. Scenes from the film The Hobbit were filmed here. Short walking trails allow you to explore the forest in about an hour.

Photography tips

Morning light is ideal on the port, when fishing boats are still moored. For the Sounds, depart early: morning mist on the water creates striking images. Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve offers beautiful photos of filtered forest understory, especially at midday when light pierces the canopy.

Location and access

Havelock is located on State Highway 6, approximately 70 km east of Nelson and 40 km west of Blenheim. No frequent regular bus service serves the village; a rental vehicle is recommended. The marina is accessible on foot from the village center. Accessibility for people with reduced mobility is limited on natural trails, but the waterfront is manageable.
