At SkyCity Auckland, Weta Workshop Unleashed offers a 90-minute guided tour behind the scenes of special effects and animatronics.

Weta Workshop Unleashed is an immersive guided experience located at SkyCity Auckland, designed by the teams at Weta Workshop to open the doors to the behind-the-scenes creation of sets and special effects. The tour blends full-scale sets, interactive stations and demonstrations, built on a logic of artisanal knowledge-sharing rather than static exhibition.

Why visit Weta Workshop Unleashed

The main draw lies in rare access to genuine filmmaking craftsmanship. Visitors handle props, observe animatronics and prosthetics techniques, and understand how a sketch becomes a creature on screen. The guided tour lasts approximately 90 minutes and alternates between three thematic worlds conceived as fictional film projects, avoiding the feeling of a static museum.

The experience suits families, special effects and fantasy enthusiasts, as well as travellers in transit through Auckland seeking a covered and well-structured activity. A souvenir video shot on a reconstructed set is included with your ticket.

The History of Weta Workshop

Weta Workshop was founded in 1987 in Wellington by Richard Taylor and Tania Rodger, working from the back room of an apartment. The workshop grew through successive projects to become an award-winning enterprise capable of supporting international productions from initial sketch to final fabrication: film, television, immersive experiences, games and merchandise.

The name comes from the weta, an insect endemic to New Zealand whose Maori term wetapunga means "god of ugly things." This small creature became the emblem of the workshop—a way of embracing the idea that visual beauty often springs from the strange.

The Auckland site spans approximately 5,400 m² (58,000 sq ft) and brings together concept artists, sculptors, modelmakers, prop fabricators and special effects specialists. Unleashed extends this legacy by sharing the workshop's "ideas vault" with the general public.

What to see and do on site

The experience opens with Jeff, an orc and security chief, who serves as the narrative thread. The tour then moves through the ideas vault, where concepts, storyboards and prototypes are displayed, before progressing through three reconstructed production worlds.

Fauna — horror and animatronics department

The first world depicts a fictional horror film inhabited by mythological creatures. Eye drawers, artificial blood, sound devices that transform a human scream into a monster's howl: here you observe prosthetics and animatronics work in action. An alternative route is available for visitors wishing to bypass this section.

Age of the Ever-Clan — fantasy and large-scale models

The second world focuses on heroic-fantasy world-building. It climaxes with a "large-scale model," a giant diorama combining pavilions, ramparts, terraces and a monumental throne. Chain mail, leather, and fabrication stations offer hands-on exposure to production steps.

Origins — science fiction and scale effects

The final world unfolds a science-fiction set featuring a monumental golden robot and spacecraft, all designed and animated by Weta's teams. The sequence illustrates the use of scale effects and animatronic mechanisms to create the illusion of life.

Creative workshops and Weta Cave

In addition to or independently of the main tour, two short workshops are on offer: the Horror FX Workshop introduces professional makeup using silicone-gel techniques, while a crafts workshop lets you take home a leather bookmark or mail-inspired keychain. The experience concludes at the Weta Cave, which houses a mini-museum and collectibles shop.
