Tudor-style hotel on Papanui Road, in the residential Merivale neighbourhood of Christchurch, with a restaurant showcasing Canterbury produce.

On Papanui Road, in the residential Merivale neighbourhood of Christchurch, Scenic Hotel Cotswold stands out for its half-timbered Tudor architecture, inspired by villages in Gloucestershire. The establishment combines a distinctive visual identity in Nouvelle-Zélande, rooms across several categories, and a restaurant that celebrates Canterbury produce.

Why choose this accommodation

Built in 1984 and renovated in 2002, formerly known as Heartland Hotel Cotswold, the hotel has retained its half-timbered facades, pitched roofs and English charm while modernising its interiors. It's a 4-star property (to be confirmed with the establishment) suited to both leisure stays and business travel, located 10 minutes from Hagley Park and 15 to 20 minutes by car from Christchurch International Airport.

Atmosphere and architecture

Inspired by the Cotswolds, a rural region in western England, the building brings an unconventional character to Nouvelle-Zélande's hotel landscape: exposed timber framing, steep gables, carefully crafted rooflines. English-style gardens and a central courtyard surround the buildings, complemented by a vegetable garden and herb garden cultivated on-site for the restaurant.

Rooms

The hotel features approximately 76 rooms across six categories, catering to different traveller profiles:

  • Standard rooms
  • Executive studios
  • Executive suites
  • Family rooms
  • Pet-friendly rooms
  • Motor Inn, a more budget-friendly format

Standard amenities include private bathroom, flat-screen television, mini-fridge, tea/coffee facilities, iron, complimentary Wi-Fi, heating (air-conditioning in executive categories) and telephone. Some units have a kitchenette, ideal for extended stays. The Royal Suite, more spacious, can also serve as a private meeting room.

Restaurant, bar and services

Tudors on Papanui restaurant serves breakfast from 6:30am to 10am and dinner from 5pm to 9pm. The menu highlights Canterbury produce and wines from Waipara, a wine region north of Christchurch. The on-site vegetable garden supplies many of the herbs and vegetables. Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options are available, along with an evening children's menu. The bar extends the evening with local wines and cocktails.

Facilities include an outdoor pool open November to April, sauna, gym, 24-hour reception, room service, laundry, luggage storage, daily housekeeping and safes. On-site parking is complimentary subject to availability, and two electric vehicle charging points (Type 2 connector, cable to be supplied, pay-as-you-go) are accessible to guests.

The Marlowe and Westminster rooms on the ground floor host seminars, banquets and conferences accommodating up to 150 people (capacity to be confirmed depending on configuration).

Location

Merivale is one of Christchurch's most pleasant neighbourhoods, on the northern edge of the city centre. Merivale Mall shopping centre, cafés and restaurants are within walking distance. Hagley Park, the Botanic Gardens, Canterbury Museum and Christchurch Casino are all a few minutes away by car or bike.

When to stay

Christchurch enjoys a temperate climate with distinct seasons. Southern summer (December–February) remains the mildest period, ideal for enjoying the outdoor pool, which is open November to April. Spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) offer pleasant light and a less crowded city. Winter (June–August) is cool but dry, convenient for combining Christchurch with ski resorts in the Southern Alps.

What to see nearby

Christchurch is an excellent base for exploring the South Island: Banks Peninsula and Akaroa to the east, Canterbury Plains, Waipara wine region to the north, or the TranzAlpine railway to Greymouth crossing the Southern Alps. The city itself deserves a full day between Cathedral Square, Re:START and the historic tramway.
