Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier in New Zealand
Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier in New Zealand
Historic 1928 hotel in Fox Glacier village, at the heart of the Westland World Heritage park. The logical base for exploring the glacier and the West Coast.
Opened in 1928, Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier ranks among the historic accommodations on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. This hotel has welcomed generations of mountaineers and hikers who came to explore the glaciers and rainforests of the Westland World Heritage park (Te Wahipounamu). Today, it remains a logical base for exploring the Fox Glacier area.
Why stay here
The hotel combines three rare advantages in the region: a location directly in Fox Glacier village, nearly a century of heritage serving mountain travelers, and immediate access to the main natural sites of the West Coast. It is easily spotted from State Highway 6, the main road linking all the stops along the West Coast.
From the common areas, the view sweeps across the snow-capped peaks of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman, two of the country's highest summits. This horizon, combined with the glacier's proximity, makes an overnight stay worthwhile rather than a quick pass-through.
Atmosphere
The spirit of the place remains that of a mountain lodge: exposed woodwork, fireplaces in the lounges, hushed atmosphere perfect for returning from a day's hike. The building has been renovated without erasing the original Alpine architecture codes. You'll meet travelers from all corners of the globe, often just back from a glacier walk or helicopter flight, lingering by the fireplace or at the bar for the evening.
The rooms
The hotel offers approximately 54 rooms, divided into two main categories:
- Standard Rooms of 25 m², available in several bed configurations.
- One-bedroom Suites of 32 m², with separate living area and clear views of the Southern Alps.
All rooms feature a private bathroom, hairdryer, central heating, mini-refrigerator, tea and coffee facilities, and a flat-screen television. Depending on the category, some units have a balcony or veranda facing the mountains; a few suites include a spa bath.
Dining and services
Two restaurants operate on-site. The White Pub Café & Bar serves New Zealand pub cuisine centered on regional produce: beer-battered fish, salmon, lamb shanks, ribeye steaks, and vegetarian options. It's also the evening meeting point, with pool tables, TV screens, and local craft beers.
The Sir William Fox Restaurant & Bar offers a quieter atmosphere, with a menu focused on hearty breakfasts and fireside dinners, accompanied by a selection of New Zealand wines.
For services, the hotel provides complimentary Wi-Fi, safes, free parking, coin-operated laundry, luggage storage, and a tourist information desk where you can book local excursions.
Location
The hotel is situated in Fox Glacier village, within the Westland World Heritage park (Te Wahipounamu). Access is via State Highway 6, which runs along the west coast of the South Island. Plan on a full day's drive from Christchurch via Arthur's Pass, or roughly half a day from Queenstown via Haast Pass.
When to go
The property closes seasonally from May 1st to September 30th and reopens October 1st. Guests with winter reservations are relocated either to the Heartland Hotel Glacier Country opposite, or to the Legacy Te Waonui Hotel in Franz Josef, about 30 minutes away. The most stable season for combining glacier hiking and rainforest walks runs from November to March, avoiding the peak crowds of late December.
Nearby attractions
Several natural sites are accessible from the hotel:
- The Fox Glacier (Te Moeka o Tuawe), reachable by trail or guided ice hike.
- Lake Matheson, renowned for its reflections of the peaks on calm days.
- Gillespies Beach, along the Tasman coast.
- The Copland Track, a trail leading to hot springs deep in the rainforest.
Helicopter flights over the glacier and salmon fishing rank among the most popular activities. Other West Coast and South Island stages can round out your itinerary, such as Te Anau, gateway to Fiordland, or Lake Tekapo, for its high-altitude scenery.
